Our experience with Australian Shepherds began early in the 1970’s. Over the past 38 years our dogs have performed obedience, stock control, Frisbee fun, guard dog, child nanny, yard patrol and faithful companion duties. Our first experience with the Australian Shepherd came in the form of Ace a black and white (BI) male inherited from a friend with terminal cancer. Ace was a constant companion; he rode on the gas tank of my 1948 Harley Davidson Pan head ears flapping in the wind all over the southwest. Frequently, he watched over the motorcycle in front of the local pub as I sampled the fair. When I enlisted in the US Navy Ace stayed behind with my parents. Once I started a family of my own, I wanted Ace to join us, but my folks would not part with him. Instead they searched for a replacement solution. Mom and Dad Rutledge replaced Ace twice first with Bonnie and second with Chance. We made out in the deal Bonnie and Chance helped raise our four children, always there always vigilant. The tributes below briefly detail the bond we formed.

Rockytops Rockstar Echo October 3, 2001- May 31, 2010
This year I lost a very important boy in my life, my most loyal friend, a part of my shadow. Echo was part of the sun to me; he brought so much sunshine into my life. He was a once in a lifetime dog, the kind of dog that only the greatest get compared to. Losing him has been devastating to the entire family. Saying goodbye to him was the most painful thing I've ever had to do. We all miss him so much. He gave truth to the saying "only the good die young". I want to give a very special thanks to Kendal and Todd Sharp for the donation to William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital - Small Animal Clinic in memory of Echo. It was the kindest, most thoughtful gift we have received and we appreciate it so much.
Until we meet again in Heaven,
Loved and sadly missed by the Rutledge Family

Bonnie Sunshine of Odyssey September 5, 1984- October 31, 2000
In Loving memory of Bonnie a gift from Mom and Dad Rutledge. Bonnie you were the GREATEST DOG there ever was, always listening and wanting to please. Bonnie raised our children, guarding their every move and watching any stranger that dared to come near. You brought so much happiness into our lives. You made us laugh, and you touched so many young hearts. Everyone who came to know you loved you, but not as much as your mate, Chance. I don't think he ever got over losing you. Thank you for all the wonderful years you gave our family.
Until we meet again in Heaven,
Loved and sadly missed by the Rutledge Family

Chance we’ve got an Ace up our Sleeve November 28, 1985- April 12, 2002
In loving memory of Chance a gift from Mom and Dad Rutledge – as a canine companion to our Bonnie Sunshine of Odyssey. Not a single problem from the moment he arrived to join our family. At 6 months old, he was a focus for our daughter she loved him and trained Chance in obedience. He went far beyond anything we ever thought possible and anything he would have been capable of under less capable caring hands. He was a very special boy, and a wonderful member of our family. Chance, you are much loved and very much missed. Thank you for all the loyal service and wonderful years you gave our family.
Until we meet again in Heaven,
Loved and sadly missed by the Rutledge Family

Isabella October 5, 2003- October 21, 2009
My mother got Izzy for her 50th birthday. She always wanted a small dog, so the 4 pound long haired Chihuahua fit the bill. She was the best little dog. She got along great with the kids especially the babies. She grew up around Aussies, the black sheep, she thought she was one of them. No words can express how much we miss her.
Until we meet again in Heaven,
Loved and sadly missed by the Rutledge Family
